Canadian Staff Band – Festivity CD
Project Description: World-renown brass band, the Canadian Staff Band of the The Salvation Army, asked Quiet City Design to design and lay out the packaging for their latest CD recording, “Festivity”.
Requirements: The Canadian Staff Band celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2009, and an even longer tradition within The Salvation Army music world. The first incarnation of the CSB perished in the tragic sinking of the Empress of Ireland. The reinstatement of the band came many decades later in 1969. This recording is a celebration and commemoration of the band’s history and impact around the world.
Components: Bandmaster John Lam (also of London Citadel Band in western Ontario) offered a very lean design brief, providing a creative canvas for exploring the theme. Recognizable Salvation Army elements were incorporated into the cover illustration (red, yellow and blue are the colours of the Salvation Army and silver-plated brass instruments are icons of the traditional band).
The insert jacket expanded into a 12-page booklet detailing the origins of the band, the goals for the future, and extensive program notes, written by Major Ken Smith, the band’s deputy bandmaster.
The cover illustration elements carried throughout the packaging, including the CD label, printed in full colour. Digital output of the cover was provided for self promotion and advertising for print and the web.
