Empress of Ireland Memorial
Project Description: Every May, The Salvation Army holds a memorial service remembering those lost in Canada’s worst marine disaster, the sinking of the Empress of Ireland. This year marks the 95th anniversary and The Salvation Army wanted bring awareness and emphasis to the event within the organization and community.
Requirements: The memorial service takes place at Mount Pleasant cemetery every year, but generally hasn’t seen much support from younger generations of Salvationists. Raising the profile of the event with posters, PowerPoint announcement slides and bulletin inserts, as well as online announcements would assist in generating awareness, interest and participation.
Components: The central focal point of the campaign material is a photograph of the ship shortly before its last voyage across the Atlantic. Several images were collected during the project development, but this single image was selected for its stoic and grand impression.
The print campaign consisted of posters (11″x17″) printed on 115lb glossy stock and distributed to churches and facilities in the region. A PowerPoint slideshow was developed to assist churches with multimedia to announce and advertise the event. Download PowerPoint Slideshow (526 KB, PPS format)
Service program covers for the event match the style and design. These pre-printed pages on 80lb uncoated text stock allow the administration to run the sheets through copiers for adding the service details.

I’ve been reading up on marine disasters and was unaware of the terrrible toll in the Empress of Ireland incident. Thank you for being so faithful to the memory of these [167?] soldiers – everyone here has a soft spot for the Sally Army, and oldies like me remember even the work done in the Second World War. God bless you
